Feeling a cold coming on? 

Cook the whites of a green onion with a couple slices of fresh ginger in water for 5 minutes. Drink it and wrap yourself in a warm blanket. Go lie down and rest. This will induce a slight sweat and can nip a cold. This only works at the very first sign of a cold. The chinese herbal formula Gan Mao Ling is another very effective way to stop a cold in the very early stages.

For reducing a cough with too much phlegm

Slice a winter pear (dark skin variety) in half and core it. Fill the core with 1 teaspoon rock sugar. Poach in 1 cup of water in a pot with a lid for 15 minutes. Drink the liquid and eat the pear. If your cough has yellow phlegm cook it with the skin on. If your cough has white phlegm cook it without the skin. Eat the pear and drink the liquid. Do this twice a day.
